Overview

Rushaga Gorilla Camp provides a genuine tented safari experience in one of Bwindi's most productive gorilla trekking sectors. The camp is set on a hillside above the Rushaga area, surrounded by cultivated terraces and forest edge, with views stretching across the valley to the forested ridges of the national park.

Accommodation consists of spacious safari tents mounted on raised wooden platforms, each with comfortable beds, en-suite bathroom with hot bucket shower, and a private veranda. The central mess tent serves as dining room, bar and lounge, with a campfire area outside where guests gather in the evenings to share their trekking stories.

The Rushaga sector is home to several habituated gorilla families, including some of the more recently habituated groups that offer a particularly authentic trekking experience. The camp staff are experienced in the area and can arrange all activities including gorilla trekking, the Batwa trail, birding walks and community visits.

The Rushaga sector holds the highest concentration of habituated gorilla families within Bwindi Impenetrable National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world's most significant mountain gorilla destinations. The presence of multiple family groups in the same sector significantly increases the likelihood of a successful trek, and makes Rushaga the sector of choice for travellers focused on gorilla encounters above all else.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a bucket shower?
Hot water is heated and delivered in a large bucket that feeds a gravity shower head. It provides a generous amount of hot water and is a classic element of the tented safari experience.
How many gorilla families are in the Rushaga sector?
Rushaga is home to the largest concentration of habituated gorilla families in Bwindi, with several groups available for standard trekking and Gorilla Habituation Experience (GHEX) permits. The exact number of trekking-available groups can change with UWA decisions — the camp team provides up-to-date information on arrival.
Is the camp open year-round?
Yes, the camp operates throughout the year. During the wet season (March–May and October–November) the trails are muddier but the forest is lush and green.
Do I need a 4x4 vehicle to reach the camp?
A 4x4 vehicle is strongly recommended, especially during the wet season. The camp can arrange transfers from nearby airstrips.
How much does a gorilla trekking permit cost in Bwindi?
A gorilla trekking permit costs $800 per person for foreign non-residents. Permits are booked separately through the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and are not included in the lodge rate. $10 from each permit goes directly to the local communities surrounding Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Where can I see mountain gorillas in Uganda?
Mountain gorillas can be observed in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in southwestern Uganda, and in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The Rushaga sector in southern Bwindi has the highest concentration of habituated gorilla families and is considered one of the most productive areas for gorilla trekking.
What does "habituated" mean for a gorilla family?
Habituated gorilla families are groups that have been gradually accustomed to human presence over a period of several years. Only once a family is fully habituated does the Uganda Wildlife Authority issue trekking permits for that group. Some of the more recently habituated families in Rushaga offer a particularly unfiltered and authentic encounter.
What is the community contribution from gorilla permits?
$10 from every gorilla trekking permit sold is channelled directly to communities surrounding Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. These funds support local conservation projects and household livelihoods — a model that ties the economic wellbeing of local communities to the protection of the gorillas and their habitat.
