Overview

Gorilla Valley Lodge sits directly on the border of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in the Rushaga sector — so close that mountain gorillas have been known to wander into the garden from the neighbouring forest. Twelve en-suite rooms are built on the steep slope to maximise the dramatic forest views, each with a private terrace looking out over the canopy and the distant Virunga volcanoes.

The rooms feature grass-thatch roofing, solar-heated hot water and comfortable beds, with interiors simply but tastefully decorated using local textiles and wooden furniture. The central lodge houses a restaurant, fully stocked bar and lounge, providing a warm space for meals and evening relaxation. Flexible board options — bed and breakfast, half board or full board — let guests choose the arrangement that suits them.

The Rushaga sector is home to the largest concentration of habituated gorilla families in Bwindi, and the lodge offers access to both standard gorilla trekking and the extended gorilla habituation experience. The surrounding landscape of terraced farms and banana plantations provides a scenic backdrop, while Batwa community visits and forest walks round out the activity programme.

Planning Your Trek

Staying at Gorilla Valley Lodge puts you close to the Rushaga sector trailhead — the briefing starts at 7:30 a.m.

A gorilla trekking permit costs $800 per person and is booked separately through the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) — not included in your lodge rate. $10 from each permit goes directly to local communities surrounding Bwindi, linking conservation with the livelihoods of the people who live alongside the gorillas.
