Why Choose Ruhija?

Ruhija is Bwindi's highest trekking sector, sitting at roughly 2,300 metres in montane forest. It is the coldest, quietest, and most remote of the four sectors — and that is precisely its appeal. With only two habituated gorilla families, Ruhija receives fewer visitors than Buhoma or Rushaga, and the atmosphere is noticeably more peaceful.

The sector is also Bwindi's best destination for serious birdwatching. The Mubwindi Swamp trail passes through habitat for Albertine Rift endemic species, and the high-altitude forest supports a different bird community than the lower sectors. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park — about 50 kilometres north of Mgahinga — is home to roughly 400 mountain gorillas in the wider park area (Reiseführer Uganda, 2020).

During our gorilla trekking in January 2026, we walked for about an hour before encountering our first gorilla family — a silverback was sitting high in the tree canopy, calmly eating leaves. The rangers and armed guides who accompanied us were professional and reassuring throughout. The trek was physically demanding in places, but the rangers helped on the steepest sections and were genuinely enthusiastic about the forest.

Ruhija Gorilla Safari Lodge — The Sector's Best All-Rounder

The most established lodge in the sector, Ruhija Gorilla Safari Lodge sits on a hilltop 2 kilometres from the gorilla trekking departure point, with sweeping views across the rainforest toward the Virunga volcanoes and the Albertine Rift (Reiseführer Uganda, 2020). The lodge has 14 rooms — six rustic doubles in the main building and eight surrounding wooden cottages, four of which are deluxe cabins with large open fireplaces. At 2,300 metres, those fireplaces are not a luxury — nights are genuinely cold.

Doubles from $200 and cottages from $260 per night including full board (Reiseführer Uganda, 2020 — verify current rates). The lodge is part of the Asyanut Safari group and has a well-stocked wine cellar. WiFi is available.

Best for: The most comfortable base in Ruhija with full-service dining and dramatic views. Ideal for couples and birdwatchers who want reliable comfort after a cold, steep trek.

Cuckooland Tented Lodge — Total Seclusion in the Forest

Cuckooland is one of the most characterful stays in all of Bwindi. The lodge has just four safari tents on wooden platforms, set in beautifully isolated grounds 15 kilometres northeast of Ruhija beside the Butogota–Ruhija Road (Reiseführer Uganda, 2020). To reach it, you leave your vehicle at a car park and walk steeply downhill for about 10 minutes.

That walk filters out the casual visitor. What you find at the bottom is a small, lovingly maintained property with a planted swimming pond, an improvised open-air fitness area, and food made from ingredients grown on site. Lunch costs $10 and dinner $15. Safari tents from $140 per night including breakfast (Reiseführer Uganda, 2020 — verify current rates).

Best for: Travellers seeking total seclusion and a back-to-nature experience. Not suitable if you have mobility issues — the steep access walk is unavoidable.

Gorilla Mist Camp — Safari Tents at the Forest Edge

A mid-range tented camp in the Ruhija sector with a forest-edge position. Gorilla Mist Camp offers safari-style tents with en-suite bathrooms, a communal dining area, and guided birdwatching walks. The camp is close to the Ruhija briefing point, making morning logistics straightforward.

The tented camp atmosphere — canvas, paraffin lamps, forest sounds at night — gives a more immersive feel than a conventional lodge. At this altitude, warm blankets and hot-water bottles are standard.

Best for: Safari atmosphere at altitude, birdwatchers, those wanting a classic tented-camp experience without the isolation of Cuckooland.

Bakiga Lodge — Community Roots

A community-owned lodge in the Ruhija area named after the Bakiga people, the predominant ethnic group in the Bwindi highlands. The lodge offers simple but comfortable accommodation with a community tourism emphasis — revenue supports local development projects. The location provides easy access to both gorilla trekking and the Mubwindi Swamp birding trail.

Best for: Community-minded travellers who want their accommodation spending to benefit local people directly. A good mid-point between budget camps and full-service lodges.

Budget Options in Ruhija

Ruhija Community Rest Camp sits about five minutes' walk from the trekking meeting point and is popular with backpackers. Cottages from $65 per night including breakfast (Reiseführer Uganda, 2020 — verify current rates). WiFi is available.

Gorilla Friends Resort & Campsite offers four basic safari tents on wooden platforms, three simple rooms, and a campsite. This is the cheapest option in the sector — no frills, but functional for travellers who want to spend their budget on the $800 gorilla permit rather than the pillow.

Luxury Options Near Ruhija

Ruhija itself does not have a true luxury lodge. If you want top-tier accommodation with proximity to Ruhija trekking, two options in neighbouring sectors are worth considering.

Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge is a luxury property with eight spacious bandas, each completely renovated in 2018 with stone walls, freestanding bathtubs, and private yoga mats. A mini-spa, open-air dining veranda, and campfire evenings complete the experience. Singles from $445, doubles from $740 including full board (Reiseführer Uganda, 2020 — verify current rates). Gorilla families occasionally wander onto the property.

Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge sits above 2,000 metres on Nteko Ridge near Nkuringo, making it the highest-altitude lodge in Uganda (Reiseführer Uganda, 2020). A joint project between Wildplaces Africa and the African Wildlife Foundation, it features spacious cottages built from local volcanic stone with large fireplaces, panoramic windows, and handwoven carpets. Both properties require separate gorilla trekking permits for their respective sectors (Buhoma/Nkuringo), not Ruhija.

Practical Tips for Staying in Ruhija

Pack warm layers. At 2,300 metres, Ruhija is significantly colder than the lower sectors — temperatures can drop below 10°C at night, and mornings are often misty. A fleece and warm hat are essential, not optional.

Bring a good torch. Infrastructure in Ruhija is more basic than in Buhoma, and power cuts happen. A head torch is essential for getting around after dark.

Book before arriving. Ruhija has fewer accommodation options than other sectors, and during peak season the better properties fill up. Unlike Buhoma, you cannot easily walk between lodges to check availability.

Hire a porter on trek day ($15–20). The terrain around Ruhija is steep and the altitude makes even moderate slopes feel harder. Our rangers in January 2026 were brilliant — armed for safety (which felt unusual at first but was completely normal), knowledgeable, and genuinely enthusiastic about helping on the difficult climbs.
